Chapter 3.21 L is the twenty-second chapter of Volume 3.

tl;dr[]

Lyonette feeds Pawn's assigned Soldiers and discovers the effect of burning Faerie Flowers, letting her collect Ashfire Bees.

Synopsis[]

Pawn has been assigned a squadron of Soldiers, and has no idea how to lead them. He orders them to rest, then asks Belgrade and Anand on advice on how to treat them. The [Tactician]'s only advice is to treat them as troopers while Klbkch arrives and admonishes Pawn for his Soldiers who caused a disturbance. In despair, Pawn leaves the Hive and visits the Wandering Inn.

Lyonette eagerly serves him, having had not a single guest for two days, and they make a little small talk. While Pawn relished the time in the inn and intends to visit with his squad next time, Lyonette gets the impression that he hated his stay and despairs even more. Knowing that the Antinium liked the Ashfire Bees, and that the bees are the only free ingredient she has available, Lyonette goes out to collect some honey and bees.

Klbkch negotiates with Zevara about allowing Antinium Soldiers outside the Hive, and she agrees.

Lyonnette meanwhile fails in her attempts to distract the bees with smoke, and has to flee into a snow pile. Upon her return to the inn, she realizes that she never watered the flowers. She does so now, but most are dead. She burns one dead flower in the fire place, and the soporific smoke knocks her out. With a plan in mind, Lyonette approaches the bees again and harvests a lot of honey. When she returns to the inn, Mrsha is there waiting, and they have a breakfast together.

Lyonette offers Selys the opportunity to take care of Mrsha, who had been unruly until returning to the inn. Then, Pawn arrives with his assigned Soldiers, just in time for a treat.
