Chapter 4.12 is the thirteenth chapter of Volume 4.

tl;dr[]

The range of the Magical Door is determined. Erin buys Inn extensions from Klbkch including a tower for Bird, then hires the latter as guard and Safry and Maran as barmaids.

Synopsis[]

  • Erin sings about Ryoka and herself, likening them to famous duos. Ryoka insists that Erin is Patrick and Ryoka is Batman before Ryoka pasys the receptionist two gold for the room. Ryoka then promises to visit Garia's farm in a few days with Mrsha and Fals. When they return to the inn Zel had left but the adventurers hadn't. Ceria tells them about Vuliel Drae successfully getting treasure from the dungeon via the hole that Mrsha fell down. The adventurers in the inn are looking over the rough map that they purchased.
  • The Gold-ranks agree that the silver-ranks were mostly lucky thanks to the lone adventurer that helped them and Jelaqua grouses over other adventurers already benefitting from the dungeon. Halrac and Seborn leave to investigate the not-Gnoll monsters. Revi and Typhenous begin to try out some of Erin's magical cooking.
  • Ryoka asks Pisces to help her research how much mana the door uses, he's surprised by Ryoka's insight and wonders if she has something akin to [Engineer] as her class. As the two begin working out the problem Typhenous joins the two in their discussion. They conclude that without recharging the door can transfer around 50 people back and forth at full capacity. Moore joins them in their discussion and they have Ryoka carry a marker to test the distance of the teleportation.
  • As their discussion gets more and more involved Erin looks over at the "nerds" and wonders why Ceria isn't there talking with them. Ceria explains that she doesn't understand this kind of magic, to her ice magic is more like sculpting than calculations. Revi explains that magic isn't the same for everyone and likens her summoning magic to keeping up conversations with all her familiars. The discussing mages break for food before Ceria and Revi get into an argument with them about their magic styles. Ryoka teleports back in and makes the mages get back to testing.
  • Klbkch arrives at the inn looking to speak to Ryoka, but Erin asks him about her hiring Garry to work as her cook. Klbkch declines and eventually Erin asks about hiring Bird as guard for the inn. She begins to sketch an expanded inn for Klbkch with a tall tower which she wants to name the Bird's Nest. Klbkch agrees if Bird does but tells her that the design for her inn would be 328 gold, 3% of which is a tax from Liscor - Ryoka overhears and offers to pay for it with the money the Horns are paying her for the delivery to Invrisil.
  • After Klbkch leaves Erin goes to the Frenzied Hare to speak to the barmaids. Agnes is out with her husband and Maran and Safry are working alongside a new hire when Erin tells Safry about her situation. Safry calls over Maran and asks if Erin can hire them instead - they tell her that she's a better boss than Agnes and after Erin tells them she can pay them 1 silver and 6 copper per hour Safry tells her that she can also grab some of her friends if Erin needs more barmaids.
  • Ryoka finishes testing the door by dinner and the mages conclude that the door can manage a distance of about 536 miles which will fully exhaust it's mana supply. It takes about 8.2 hours to fully recharge.
  • The adventurer marvel that that's about the distance to Invrisil, but Relc loudly wonders why anyone would want to go there with all the humans. He's spent the day breaking up four brawls between human adventurers who always fight back unlike Drakes. Revi mentions that the Watch in most human cities are barely bronze-rank unlike the Drake standards.
  • Olesm finally manages to speak to Erin about his news, a famous [Strategist] from one of the Walled Cities wants to come to Liscor to play against Erin. Ivolethe returns to the inn and agrees to accompany Ryoka and Mrsha to Garia's farm. Ivolethe thinks it's time for her to teach Ryoka some magic, and she thinks that it will at least be entertaining for her even if Ryoka can't.
  • As Erin and Olesm play a game of chess, Olesm mentions that one of the Walled Cities, south of Liscor, is also in range of the door. Relc overhears and it reminds him that he needs to get his spear back, his enchanted one that he left behind with the army when he left. Apparently Liscor's army is fighting around one of the Walled Cities.
  • Finally Bird arrives and Erin quickly communicates her desire for him to work as her guard. He accepts enthusiastically before Erin asks what Pawn wanted from her. Bird tells her that Pawn was assigned to combat duty with some soldiers under his command and he wanted to talk to Erin in case he died.
