Chapter 5.56 G is the sixty-second chapter of Volume 5, and the fourteenth chapter of Book 9, Tears of Liscor.

Synopsis[]

Pyrite, thrown by Eater of Spears, lands among the Goblin Lord's army. As Eater charges, as goblins start attacking, Pyrite is aided by the Flooded Waters Tribe goblins. Noears takes over for Pyrite in facing Eater of Spears, freeing the hob to fight Reiss. Pyrite presses for Reiss and puts increasing pressure on the Goblin Lord until Reiss is forced to retreat and flee, incidentally demorialising his tribe. Then Reiss sees an out, channeling magic into himself and, in his own way, channeling Zel Shivertail and his style of fighting instead of his own, a style Reiss saw well used with his own eyes. Pyrite's tide-like push is stopped and broken. The two slug it out before Reiss [Deathbolt]s Pyrite multiple times. Pyrite falls, dead. Then Reiss turns to Rags, casting again and incidentally killing Rags' Carn Wolf, dismounting Rags. The two tribes meet in a roar, Rags disappearing in the chaos, and never reappearing. The Flooded Waters Tribe goblins flee, their Chieftain slain. The Goblin Lord's army forces the goblins they can to join on pain of death.

Meanwhile Garen Redfang watches the betrayal between Goblin Lord Reiss and Rags, and how Pyrite delimbs Reiss, how Reiss reattaches his severed hand. He reserves choosing a side for later, but still judges the battle from afar as Pyrite and Reiss go at each other. As Rags is slain, he calls out for the Flooded Waters Tribe goblins to join the Redfang tribe, to fight the Goblin Lord. Few do, and most of those were former Redfangs, but not all. Redscar and other former Redfangs deny Garen's call.

As Reiss consolidates his newly acquired goblins, he realises the Flooded Waters Tribe goblins are unexpectedly fast in their flight; he concludes Rags survival and orders her killed.

Garen and his Redfangs break from the other goblins as the humans try to corral them back and disrupt the infighting among goblins. Instead of going directly for the High Passes, the Redfangs' home, he orders them to take a detour into Drake lands and enter the High Passes from there. While the humans are preparing to intercept the Redfangs' sally, they have to break off and instead face the thousands of Eater Goats, who, having taken note of the carnage and easy food available, come down from the High Passes.

Tyrion Veltras considers the remaining goblins to be still sufficient for his plans.

Rags survived, having hidden herself, buried by dead goblins and her Carn Wolf's body. On the empty field she looks for Pyrite's body, hammering on his chest in frustration. In answer Pyrite crunches gems, being not dead after all, his gem-crunching having allowed him to survive the [Deathbolt]s somehow. The two vent and bond. A couple of Tremborag's former goblins and hobs, chief among them Ulvama, join the two.

Near Liscor thousands Cave Goblins leave the Dungeon, settling on the isle-like hilltops around the city, led by Numbtongue. They hold an implicit protest of sorts to free the other Hobs currently imprisoned in Liscor.
