Quotes[]

Note: Due to him sometimes pretending to be a Half-Elf named Eldavin, the quotes are separated as Himself and as the Half-Elf (Eldavin) or just Eldavin when the alias was revealed.

Volume 1[]

As a Half-Elf (Eldavin):

  • To Ryoka:
    • “I am not familiar with either name. What nation does this Oakland California hail from?”
    • “You are a Runner, are you not? Can you not simply outrun arrows?”

As Himself:

  • (To himself) “Oops. Ah, well. This is why humans use healing potions after all.”

Volume 2[]

As Himself:

  • To Magnolia:
    • “I’m well aware. And my abode is not a ‘cave’.”
    • “Hold on. Something is approaching my cave—I mean, my place of residence.”
  • To Ryoka:
    • “I wish to know of any ongoing major wars between multiple nations, new technologies or spells developed, legendary monsters sighted or slain—import of that nature. Tell me all the news you have heard of in the past several years or so. What has transpired while I have been…secluded here?”
    • “This is not a hoard. You will not think it is a hoard.”
    • “Flying with magic, is what I mean. Not that I know of any other ways to fly, of course.”
    • “You must be warier, Ryoka Griffin. Darker things lurk in the High Passes. They do not smell—or if they do, they have different opinions than we do.”
  • To Ryoka:
    • “There. Kindly do not track—kindly do not bleed in my domain again.”
    • “Dragon? What? You must be…I’m not a Dragon. Hah. You must be mistaken.”
    • “I’m not a Dragon. You’re mistaken. I’m uh, an [Archmage]. You must have confused my noble disposition with a Dragon’s…somehow.”
    • “What need have I for souls, I, a Dragon, the lord of flame?”
  • To the Frost Faeries:
    • OUT OF MY CAVE!

Volume 3[]

As a Half-Elf (Eldavin):

  • (To Ceria) “Otherwise, what? If I refuse, what will you do? Will you prevent me from speaking with this girl?”
  • (To Erin) “You are Erin Solstice, aren’t you? Explain this to me.”
  • (To himself) “Swipe left. Fascinating.”
  • (To Erin) “Ah. Well then, I shall make do with these new…apps. Thank you for your help, Erin Solstice.”
  • (To Pisces) “We hardly need more necromancers. But I suppose your control of magic is quite good for one so young. Keep practicing.”
  • (To Erin) “And thanks to you as well for showing me how this device works. Farewell, Erin Solstice. We shall not meet again.”

Volume 4[]

As Himself:

  • (To himself) “I feel so empty.”
  • (To Venitra) “Wretch. Thing. You dare trespass in my domain?”
  • To Az'kerash:
    • Worm.”
    • Az’kerash, you worm! You dare? You dare send your minions to trespass in my home?
    • “Ryoka Griffin. You tried to kill her! A Runner! A messenger! Have you no shame, coward?
    • I do not want to hear your excuses, brat!
    • “She is under my protection now. Understand? Kill or threaten her, and I will personally exact a reckoning upon you and your toys!”

Volume 7[]

As Himself:

  • (To Frost Wyverns) “You lousy nuisances! This is my territory! BEGONE!
  • (To himself) “I should hire some…adventurers. Yes. Deal with them. Why not? A few Gold-ranks…get to it when I wake…arrogant…get out of my territory. Goats…”
  • (To Rags) “They come, the children seeking the heart of flame Those who inherited the earth and remember the dead names We alone remain. The old ways are broken and our friends long since passed And we remember they kept oath and held to the last Our dearest friends, gone in glory. So come, young, who know not what was given away Plead the mortal plight of your lives this day And look upon the last gathering of Dragon and Wyrm.”
  • (To Ryoka) “The Dragon’s answer is this: good, or evil. Effort or not. It never matters. All things end.

As Eldavin:

  • (To Erin) “If you would crave anything, do not crave safety. Look towards the courage to walk through adversity. That is more valuable than any illusion. Treasure the moments you have, child.”

As Himself:

  • (To Ryoka) “For friendship—move mountains. For friendship, challenge the will of the Faerie King. Do it, Ryoka Griffin. You are young. Dare it.”

As Eldavin:

  • (To himself and Magnolia’s staff) “Hah. As if you’re the only one who can conduct trade deals, you little brat! That was so amusing. Ah, well…where’s my popcorn? The inn was faster than this!
  • To Erin:
    • “I don’t play chess for lack of suitable opponents. I myself am something of a… master.”
    • One more game takes all. But we’re betting on this one. I won’t lose again!”

As Himself:

  • (To Reynold) “I didn’t teleport your legs, Human.”
  • To himself:
    • “No more Izril for a while. No Magnolia—no Griffin. They can take care of themselves. They must. This world neither needs me nor benefits from my interference. They can only rise by themselves.”
    • “Mm. Body check complete. Clothing check? Undergarments…yes. Do I wear…? No, brassieres are for females. Usually.”
    • Wrymblood and fire! I should have packed the laptop!
    • “A Dragon can do what he damn well pleases.”

Volume 8[]

As Himself:

  • (To Ryoka) “When I do, I promise you, I will call you. And I shall uncover the means to help Erin Solstice. If it can be done, I can do it.”
  • (Thoughts) They burn bright, like fireflies. That is why we do not grow attached. I did not even know her.
  • (Prerecorded Message to intruders) “Intruder. I do not know how you found this place, but that you have found it means you have, by virtue of extraordinary luck or intention, stumbled upon my domain. If you are hearing this…it means i am dead”……“That you have entered here is surely after my treasures. I regret to inform you, visitor, that since you are here, the likelihood is far greater that you have had a hand in my death. In which case, I must remind you: when a Dragon falls, naught remains. Perish, along with my hoard.”…“Ah. One moment. My spell appears to have detected you are one of my kind. I suppose you may be the Dragonlords of War or Waves, in which case I would kindly ask you to trigger the kill-spell and off yourselves, you pathetic ingrates. I cannot imagine you bested me fairly.”…“…But perhaps you are not. Perhaps you are one of my kind, be it Wyrm or Wyvern. Perhaps you slew me, and you deserve all the vengeance of mortals. No matter who it is though—my kin. I am tired of watching us die. Let me be the last. So. Enter. Be welcome. Remember, I was Teriarch. Dragonlord of Flame.”

As Eldavin:

  • (To Charles) “Young man, if a name were all it took to terrorize Terandria, your ‘Necromancer’ would have conquered it long ago. Nor do I require lectures from a lesser [Mage]. I am Grand Magus Eldavin and my understanding of the magical craft is second only to the Archmages.”
  • (To everyone) “Archmages of Wistram! Esteemed guests! It is my honor to return to the halls of Wistram after a century’s time! I, Grand Mage Eldavin, have elected to perform a magical working in honor of this occasion!
  • (To Viltach) “You have the audacity to call yourself an Archmage? I knew the Archmage of Golems! How many challenges do you think he endured, boy?
  • To Teura:
    • “You want to use fire on me?
    • “Spells cast the same way. Magic recited and memorized by rote. Magic is more than a Tier. More than a level!”
  • (To everyone) “I am Grand Magus Eldavin. And that seems to mean more than it did when I left. I knew Zelkyr of old and Chandler both! They do not even dare to say his name here. But you will respect my will!”
  • (To Troy) “It seems magic has changed a great deal since I last came to Wistram. And yet—this is still the academy of [Mages]. I see talent, even if it can be honed.”
  • (Thoughts) Wait but a while longer, Ryoka Griffin. For I will surely return. But right now…I am a [Mage] of Wistram. And magic needs my help.
  • (To Verki) “Television, food, armaments, food, theories of electricity, more food, plays? I know all of this. Hm. Wait. This is new.”
  • (To Naili) “Yes we do. But my ire? Archmage Nailihuaile. You have seen my ire. Should Wistram decide to upset me, you will see what happens when I go to war. And you have not seen that.”
  • To Cognita:
    • “I do! Or at least, I argue that he was not without flaw. Even Dragons are not without flaw!”
    • “Retract? Petty is what I meant! Drakes can be the most childish, petty creatures in existence! And it seems Zelkyr never rose to become more than the average Drake, in the end!”
    • “Zelkyr, greatest of his kind? He was a genius, yes. You are shaped by that vast intellect and imagination. But also, his flaw. That he left more genius than not in his creations is his greatest legacy.”
    • “I know how your kind behaves, young woman. I told you, I’m old. Even stone has a tell. When you are ready to be reasonable, come find me.”
  • (To Ceramic Golem) “You there. Shoo, shoo. No, I don’t want a drink. Out of the room. There you go.”
  • To the viewers:
    • “I am Grand Magus Eldavin of Wistram. You do not know me. However, I have taken it upon myself to pioneer a new event in this…television.”
    • “I am Eldavin. Grand Magus and one of the last true spellcasters in this world. Only the Archmages exceed my knowledge. I dare to say that I am among the oldest of the mortal races in this world; even among my kind, I am one of the last of my age.”
  • To Cognita:
    • “I will not be. It hurts, doesn’t it? But you are too old to be a child. Listen to me, Cognita. Your master was not perfect. If you cannot acknowledge that—you cannot acknowledge reality. Love him, of course. Hate me for insulting him; that is what offspring do. But do not deny the truth.
    • “All children must confront the failings of their parents. Or how else would we see how they rise?”
    • “Threats? Cognita, my dear. Listen to me. I am not what you should fear. If words strike you this painfully—ask yourself why.”
  • (To himself) “Nosebleeds. Why design such a fragile instrument if it is going to constantly fill with snot and such? Well, all species have their foibles, but I’ve always thought noses were so unappealing.”
  • To Cognita:
    • “Destroy…is that what you thought I was here to do? Child. Cognita. Have you—? Dear girl. I am not here to destroy you. I am here to set you free.
    • “No. He is your parent. And what you think you owe him is not what you have given. I know you feel the truth. It must be so…hard, though. To face the truth.”
    • “You may never thank me for this, Cognita Amerwing. I do not expect it. Yet I will have you choose what happens next of your free will and never reproach you for what you decide. You must decide, though.
    • “No. You have a heart. Which makes you stronger and weaker than any of your kind. I came here to set you free. I do not forswear myself.”
    • “Today—the Golems of Wistram will know me. I have walked a thousand thousand wars! I have broken [Archmages] and [Heroes] who stood before me! I have championed every right, fought every foe in this world! I do not run from children!
    • You think he was the greatest [Mage] you ever knew? I crushed better! I knew better! Chandler would have been a better father!
    • “Parents should love their offspring. Zelkyr only loved you until he beheld your flaws, chasing perfection without even stopping to see your soul.
    • BECAUSE I WANT YOU TO LIVE. I have seen your death! I want you to live!”

Volume 9[]

  • (To Eldavin about Kasigna) “That name must die. And you with it. We are enemies, Eldavin. Burn.”
  • (To Erin) “My scales. What are you going to do, bake the world’s ultimate food to kill a god?”
